The reasons for that are: 1. EF-S lens produces smaller image circle (you know that already) 2. Rear EF-S lens element may extend further into the camera than EF lens. If you mount it on FF body, it may collide with mirror mechanism and damage mirror and/or sensor.
Canon is calling their latest EOS-1D digital SLR the “ultimate multimedia imaging solution.” The new Canon EOS-1D Mark IV has a 16.1-megapixel APS-H (1.3x crop factor) CMOS sensor and captures full-resolution RAW images at 10 frames per second and 1080p video at 30, 24 or 25 frames per second. The 1D IV has a few more pixels and crop factor, and once you factor this in with post-processing you can get image noise as good as the D3. The low iso shots feel a little bit sharper on the 1D IV maybe. But the D3 has less problematic autofocus, and is cheaper. The 1D IV results appear to be very slightly cleaner than the 5D II at this setting and at ISO 25600, even slightly cleaner. The 5D II retains the resolution advantage of course. 1D IV image detail is being affected significantly at ISO 25600. Your Canon is fine. The same happens to my Nikon D3 & D3X when I'm photographing a large flock of birds that's very far away. A few folk seem to have developed problems with the latest 1d Mark IV firmware which I have now running and am using without any issues. A few sample and experimental images below - all in pretty poor light shot between ISO 800 and 2000 and note that even on 'still' subjects, I have used A1 servo to monitor focus stability and accuracy.
