Facelift for me. I just like how the kidneys fall into the hood lines better. Pre is what I have and pre is what the M3 is, so pre is what I prefer. I feel like the facelift's sharper headlights make it seem more modern and fits the body lines better. The e46 non-m coupe is such a small car that the sharper lines blend better.
This is a special edition of the E46, the 2004 BMW M3 CSL. It was only available for one model year (2004), and the CSL used the design of the pre-facelift E46 Coupe (1999-2003). However it should be noted that all E46 M3s have this pre-facelift body style, it never received the 2004 facelift that the non-M3 E46 Coupes received.

Some cars even stay in production for a very long time, with facelifts happening every 5 or so years. Certain cars were better before their facelift whilst others are desperate for an update. A lot of people own pre-face lift so I can see why it can be associated with e46 non-m. Additionally M3 has the pre-face lift corners and we know that is a timeless car! I own a facelift but like the pre-facelift better. Pre-facelift is very classic, while the facelift is more feminine looking.
19170 posts · Joined 2007. #6 · Mar 28, 2008. I know for a fact, that prefacelift and facelift sedans are NOT interchangeable. It looks like coupe to sedan is possible but I haven't confirmed this yet. I'm pretty sure prefacelift coupe/M3 grilles are interchangeable. K.
The E46 M3 never received a "facelift" so to speak. It just got LED tails in the middle of the 2002 model year. SMG is a great transmission but not as fun and not nearly as fast as DCT (dual clutch). It's also jumpy and kinda funky to drive for people used to a manual. The manual gearbox on the S54 is great, but feels like rowing a boat, so I

They have a stumpy (almost square - 2 rows of connectors) connector on, whereas my car has a long thing plug (1 row of connectors). I assume the problem is the Pre/Post Facelift changes - but can't be sure.
Pre-Bangle BMW is my single favorite design aesthetic. The E39 M5, E46 M3, E31 8 series, E24 6 series, E30 3 series, 2002, and E9 are all all-timers. The E90/E92 (E93 is gross) M3s and E53 are the only designs I love from the Bangle era, and they've gotten worse since.
Pre-facelift! Absolutely. They wouldn't have kept it on the M3 if it wasn't the best. I always feel so alone on the facelift train. : (. Sup. my 97 pre facelift has digi controls. First of all welcome and congrats on the purchase. I own both pre facelift and facelift as shown in my sig.(blue is facelift red is pre) Have heaps more pics of both if you want to compare. edit: go to a BMW dealer for a decent prepurchase check - They are far better IMO. Coupe/sedan/wagon the housings are all the same, excluding the single piece units on facelift coupes. The trim inside the headlight is different pre vs post facelift because of the different lenses. I think M3s housings are slightly different with xenon ballasts mounted to the chassis instead of the housings. Don't quote me on that one though.
